This Hurricane was built in 1939. In 1940 it took part in operations to protect the BEF and their French allies during the evacuation of Dunkirk, where it was shot down by a Me 109. The pilot managed to crash land on the beach.

The tourist town of Lake Lure was devastated by the violent flooding of the Rocky Broad River that feeds the lake. Debris from Bat Cave, Gerton and Chimney Rock blasted along the river as it spilled over its banks. It washed away one end of The Flowering Bridge.

Out on the grass at the eastern end of Duxford, Hawker Hurricane IIb G-HHII is a 1942 Canadian built example, originally serving with RCAF as 1374. Restored by 2005 and active since as BE505, but never served with the RAF.

About 15 years ago, Lake Lure converted the old US 74 bridge to a garden walkway. Hurricane Helene devastated the bridge and Lake Lure. The west end of the bridge was completely destroyed and washed away. The rest of the concrete structure was compromised. It may never be restored.
