Acts 27:20-26 (ANIV)
20 When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, we finally gave up all hope of being saved.
21 After the men had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up before them and said: "Men, you should have taken my advice not to sail from Crete; then you would have spared yourselves this damage and loss. 22 But now I urge you to keep up your courage, because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed.
23 Last night an angel of the God whose I am and whom I serve stood beside me 24 and said, 'Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you.' 25 So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as he told me. 26 Nevertheless, we must run aground on some island."
DRAWING NOTES:
TIME OF DAY:
Unspecified in the Bible narrative. It could be day or night, as the sun is obscured by the storm clouds, so I have set this scene in the day time.
LIGHTING NOTES:
The main source of light for this scene is a lightning strike; the glow of which is illuminating the wooden floor and figures who are standing by the steps that lead up through an open hatch onto the ship’s deck above them.
A secondary source of warm, yellow light comes from two lanterns, hanging on a bronze peg on the base of the main mast and on one of the ship’s main ribs (or frames), on the left. There is a stub of wax candle, which a passenger has placed on a wooden stringer, on the left, but it has gone out... which is a good job really, or else the wooden ship might have gone up in flames!
CHARACTERS PRESENT:
From left to right: doctor Luke, apostle Paul, various sailors and passengers.
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
Originally I intended to draw Paul and the others he is speaking to positioned on the ship’s deck, with the storm clouds and high waves all about (see pencil sketch below), but then I thought that all the passengers and others (i.e. the ship’s owner, soldiers, Centurion Julius, etc) would most likely have taken shelter below decks. Therefore I have drawn this scene in the cramped and dark conditions underneath the deck of the ship. Notice that there are a few lanterns about the place, casting feeble yellow light into the darkness. Additionally there is a flash of lightning; the glow of which can be seen on the wooden floor boards and figures.
There are a number of mice or rats in the picture... how many can you count?! (You really need to see the scene without the Figures... view that on my Bible Cartoons website!)
It was interesting researching the construction of wooden ships and all the different names of the ship’s parts. I enjoyed drawing the interior of the Alexandrian ship, with its curved timbers and all the cargo, barrels, ropes, etc attached to the sides of the vessel. The cylindrical post on the right is the main mast, which was securely fastened to the wooden hull, and passed up through the deck(s) and out, above the deck to support the mail sail. Notice that the wooden deck planks/boards are secured using wooden pegs or fasteners, rather than bronze or iron nails.
I originally designed this scene on board the ship’s deck, with Paul talking to the frightened crew and passengers onboard. The scene would have had high ferocious waves, boiling dark clouds and startling lightning arcing across the sky. However, I realised that I had already drawn several similar scenes previously showing the ship tossed about on huge waves. Therefore I thought that a picture with Paul and some crew members below decks might be more interesting, and add a new dimension to this set of illustrations.

As of this posting, more than 120 people have drowned in the flash floods in our state of Texas, and 170 more are missing.
No intellectual arguments, no political wrangling, and no blaming or shaming can ease the pain of those who are grieving losses in this world. In truth, we need Someone who walks with us through all the struggles.
